Rosh Hashanah רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה
"head of the year" is the Jewish New Year. The Biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah יוֹם תְּרוּעָה meaning: "day of shouting/blasting" sometimes translated as the Feast of Trumpets. It is the first of the High Holidays also known as the "Days of Awe" יָמִים נוֹרָאִים Yamim Nora'im. Rosh Hashanah is a two-day celebration, which begins on the first day of Tishrei. Tishrei is the first month of the Jewish civil year, but the seventh month of the Biblical year - which starts closer to Passover. TRADITIONS Sounding of the shofar following the prescription of the Bible to "raise a noise" on Yom Teruah Eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey which symbolizes the hope for a "sweet new year". BIBLICAL REFERENCES Leviticus 23:24-25; Numbers 29:1-2; Psalm 81:3-4 TASHLICH תשליך Tashlich is the Hebrew imperative to “cast away,” taken from the verse in Micah 7:19 “He will again have compassion on us. He will subdue our iniquities, and You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” The tradition is that, during this period of repentance, we cast pieces of bread unto a river. And notice what happens, the river carries them away so that we can’t see them any more. Likewise, we trust that God does not remember our sins once we repent, washing us as white as snow by the sacrificial blood of Yeshua the Messiah. Here at Tikvat Israel we contemplate Yeshua's sacrifice at this time and conclude by partaking in the Shulchan Ha'Adon (Lord's table) together. |
